BA in Directing

BACHELOR IN DIRECTING

Unique education for you who dream of becoming a modern director!

NSKI University College's bachelor in directing focuses on the story you wish to tell and how to tell it through the use of camera, sound, light, music and through the actors. The education is based on similar educations from the USA.

The collaboration the directors have with other students from script- and acting bachelor programs through a large number of film productions is what makes this approach to teaching so unique.

"There is hardly an acting technique better suited for film and TV acting than the American technique Method Acting. The TV camera loves the vulnerability and authenticity that comes through working with whit this method. I myself have used the technique in everything I have done in film and TV direction since I learned the technique from New York professor Marka Kimbrell in the late 1980s. For me as a director, it is therefore invaluable that there is a school in Norway that teaches this technique. "

- Pål Sletaune, director and creator of the NRK series «July 22»

  • What do you learn?

The curriculum focuses on the technical as well as the analytical tools of a director, but the main focus will always be on what stories to tell and how to express it most credibly with the help of camera, light, sound, production design, acting and editing.

NSKI Univeristy College educates modern and innovative directors whose ambition is to master the directing subject as a whole. it provides students with knowledge and tools  to work independently and professionally as executive director for film and television productions.

  • The Curriculum

NSKI's bachelor's degree in directing is unique in Northern Europe. The curriculum is designed to meet the growing need in the industry for directors with experience and knowledge of how actors work, as well as how a story is built and told in a credible and engaging way.

We prefer small classes with close follow-ups from very skilled and experienced teaching staff with broad experience from the film and TV industry.

A normal day at NSKI University College is usually divided into two parts. Before lunch, so-called morning teaching takes place with an emphasis on technical subjects, whereas after lunch classes  focus on more on- the- project subjects. Most subjects extend over all three years.

  • Subjects and projects

Some of the subjects: Camera technology, Storytelling, Production, Personal instruction and Staging

Some of the projects: Minute film, Short film, Bachelor film, Film direction and Comedy.

  • Fieldtrip to New York

Each spring, second-grade directing, acting and music theater students travel to the world metropolis for a four-week project with The Cry Havoc Company, one of New York's oldest and most experienced Off-Broadway theater groups.

In collaboration with performing artists from the industry in New York, the students will instruct and stage plays which will then be presented to American audience Off-Broadway!

  • Study content

The program is interdisciplinary and based on the American Method Acting technique, which was developed in New York City in the 1930s and 1940s by Lee Strasberg, Sanford Meisner, and Stella Adler, among others. Method Acting is a skillset for approaching the technical, physical, and emotional aspects of acting that prioritizes developing the entire instrument of the actor. It enables actors to make use of their own life experiences to inform fictional characters and situations in a way that allows the actor to experience them as truthful and real.

Over the course of the three-year program in acting, the students are instructed in and gain hands-on experience with Method Acting as a tool. Students do improvisations, monologues, and scenes both on camera and on stage, including collaborating with students in the Directing program on several projects. The combination of theoretical and practical training provides the acting students with a deeper understanding of an actor’s work and develops their individual artistic potential to the greatest extent possible as they work in cooperation with directors and other performers.  After having completed the program, the student will wholly master the art of acting. The student will be able to work independently, as well as collaboratively, and master the art on par with the best national performers. The students will be well-prepared to be employed as professional actors. Moreover, they will have the skills required to continue to develop as actors over the course of their careers, and also to successfully pursue further education.
